Bliss

I get lots of emails from all over--friends, former coworkers, relatives, neighbors and the usual spam. This morning I read a short, simple message, emailed by a beautiful friend and neighbor, that really puts things in their proper perspective, so I'm sharing it here:

Anyone who imagines that bliss is normal is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that they have been robbed.

The fact is that most putts don't drop, most beef is tough, most children grow up to be just people, most successful marriages required a high degree of mutual toleration, most jobs are more often dull than otherwise.

Life is like an old-time rail journey ... delays, side tracks, smoke, dust, cinders and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride.

Amen!

(This sunset happened on Mother's Day -- a beautiful gift, don't you think?)

Goddesses

There are so many beautiful, smart, funny, sexy and STRONG women who live in the Terlingua area. One of them, Janet Sullivan, organized an annual Goddess Party years ago, and over the years the traditional May gathering at Janet's has become an almost magical, legendary event. Sadly, Janet passed away suddenly this past year, but her neighbor and good friend Elizabeth (pictured above) stepped up and carried the tradition on at her lovely home this past May 3. The event was open to all female residents and at its peak, there were about 50 lovely ladies in attendance. Endless laughter, most excellent music, fabulous food and catching up with each other were the order of the day. Of course, there were many tributes to Janet, who was dearly missed even though her presence was strongly felt.

This was my first Goddess Party and even now, nearly two weeks later, I am still smiling. What an amazing group of women! I am proud, honored and humbled to live among these strong, resilient ladies.

Here are some snapshots taken that day. I bet you can't look through them without smiling. Enjoy!

Martha will host next year's Goddess Party. I'm already counting the days!
